Effective July 1, 2025, various taxing jurisdictions will implement changes to local sales tax rates on general merchandise. These changes include the imposition of new taxes or adjustments to existing ones.
The affected categories are business district sales tax; county public safety, public facilities, mental health, substance abuse, or transportation sales tax; county school facilities sales tax; home rule municipal sales tax; and non-home rule municipal sales tax. Collectively referred to as "locally imposed sales tax," these modifications require businesses to update their cash registers and computer programs accordingly by the effective date.
Businesses using software for form creation should contact their vendors to ensure compliance with the new rates. To verify updated combined state and local sales tax rates applicable from July 2025, individuals can visit the MyTax Illinois Tax Rate Finder at mytax.illinois.gov.
