The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) has issued a reminder to residents in Jo Daviess and Carroll counties following sightings of a black bear in the area. The bear has been observed near Mississippi Palisades State Park and recently around private residences south and east of Galena.
While encountering a bear can be a rare experience, IDNR advises caution as bears are wild animals. Residents are urged to check their properties for potential food sources that might attract the bear, such as bird feeders, grills, garbage cans, and pet food. Prevention is emphasized because once a bear finds food, it is likely to return.
To prevent human-bear conflicts, IDNR recommends several Bear Wise practices:
- Never feed or approach bears.
- Secure all food, garbage, and recycling.
- Remove bird feeders if bears are active nearby.
- Avoid leaving pet food outside.
- Clean and store grills after use.
- Inform neighbors about any bear activity.
If residents encounter the bear, they should back away slowly while giving it space. Persistent encounters after removing food sources should be reported to Chris Jacques at chris.jacques@illinois.gov or an IDNR District Wildlife Biologist for guidance.
Additional information on coexisting with bears is available on the IDNR's Wildlife Illinois website. Sightings can also be reported online to IDNR.
