A Rockford man has been indicted by a federal grand jury for allegedly robbing a post office in Rockford, Illinois, this past May. Anthony M. Johnson, 58, faces one count of robbery involving a person responsible for U.S. government funds and endangering that person's life with a dangerous weapon. If convicted, Johnson could face up to 25 years in federal prison. His arraignment in U.S. District Court in Rockford is yet to be scheduled.
The indictment was announced by Andrew S. Boutros, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, and Ruth Mendonça, Inspector in Charge of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service Chicago Division. The investigation received assistance from the Rockford Police Department and is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jonathan S. Kim.
It is important to note that an indictment merely contains charges and does not serve as evidence of guilt. Johnson remains presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt at trial.
