Preparations are in motion for Illinois to partake in the nationwide celebration of 250 years of independence in 2026. The Illinois America 250 Commission is encouraging residents throughout the state to engage in planning events and educational activities to commemorate this historic milestone. Celebrations across the United States will culminate on July 4, 2026.
"The 250th anniversary is not just a celebration of our past. It's an opportunity to examine how we ended up where we are today and an invitation to consider the future we want to build,” said Gabrielle Lyon, chair of the Illinois America 250 Commission and executive director of Illinois Humanities.
She added that people across the state are eager to uplift undertold stories and involve their communities in shaping America's next chapter.
The Commission focuses on several key areas leading up to July 4, 2026:
- Engaging diverse youth statewide.
- Supporting local commemorations.
- Showcasing cultural assets.
- Providing educational resources.
"As we prepare to celebrate 250 years alongside the Illinois America 250 Commission, DCEO and the Office of Tourism will continue to highlight the unique stories and rich diversity that make Illinois an essential part of America's past, present and future,” said Kristin Richards, director of the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO).
As the United States approaches its 250th anniversary in 2026, President Donald Trump has announced plans for a year-long ”Salute to America” celebration. Commencing on Memorial Day in May 2025 and culminating on July 4, 2026, the festivities aim to honor the nation’ss founding and heritage.
Key initiatives include a “Great American State Fair” in Iowa, featuring pavilions from all 50 states, national high school sports competitions, and the establishment of a ”National Garden of American Heroes” with statues of prominent historical figures. Additionally, a grand flotilla of tall ships is planned to sail into New York Harbor on July 4, 2026, echoing the bicentennial celebrations of 1976. The America250 Commission, a non-partisan body coordinating these events, seeks to engage communities nationwide, drawing inspiration from past commemorations to foster national unity and pride.
