As Illinois marks the fifth anniversary of legalizing adult-use cannabis, the state's Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) has announced that cannabis sales have surpassed $2 billion annually. The year 2024 recorded a 2.5% increase in sales compared to the previous year, marking the fourth consecutive year of record-setting sales.
Dispensaries across Illinois reported over $2 billion in cannabis product sales for 2024. This figure includes a record-breaking $1.722 billion from adult-use cannabis and more than $285 million from medical cannabis sales. According to the Illinois Department of Revenue, taxes collected from these dispensaries exceeded $490 million in 2024.
Governor JB Pritzker commented on this achievement: “The numbers are clear: five years after we legalized adult use cannabis in Illinois, we’re seeing the economic impact of a thriving cannabis industry.” He highlighted that with "$2 billion in record-setting sales and $490 million generated in tax revenue," Illinois's equity-focused cannabis industry is a result of his administration's policies aimed at repairing damages from past drug policies, creating jobs, and fostering a diverse business sector.
