The Illinois Department of Agriculture (IDOA) has introduced a new initiative called "Illinois Grown" aimed at promoting local agricultural producers and businesses. The program will feature the Illinois Grown logo on products, indicating that they are either grown in Illinois or contain ingredients sourced from the state.
The initiative seeks to connect consumers with locally produced goods, thereby supporting the state's agricultural sector and economy. IDOA Director Jerry Costello II stated, "The Illinois Grown initiative is not just about food - it's about supporting local communities." He emphasized that purchasing these products ensures that consumer spending benefits Illinois farmers and producers directly.
Consumers are encouraged to pledge $10 of their weekly grocery budget to Illinois Grown items, which could reinvest millions into the local economy. For producers, the program offers increased visibility through state marketing campaigns without additional costs. Retailers can participate by showcasing these products in their stores and will receive free promotional materials.
Those who take the pledge online will receive a complimentary reusable bag or sticker as an incentive. More information about the program is available at www.illinoisgrown.food.
