The Illinois Department of Agriculture (IDOA) is inviting individuals and families to apply for the 2025 season of its Community Garden. The garden, located on the infield of the Illinois State Fair Grandstand racetrack, offers 200 plots for gardening enthusiasts. Half of these plots are reserved for organic gardening, while the other half are designated for non-organic practices.
"We are excited to offer space on the Illinois State Fairgrounds to people interested in growing their own food," stated IDOA Director Jerry Costello II. He highlighted that this initiative provides a low-cost option for those with limited yard space who wish to cultivate a garden.
Each plot is available at a cost of $20, with an additional fee for tilling services. Water and compost will be provided free of charge by the department. Interested participants can submit their applications through the IDOA website at agr.illinois.gov/consumers/communitygarden.html.
Applications and payments can be mailed or delivered in person to the IDOA's front desk at the John R. Block Building, Attention: Community Garden, 801 E. Sangamon Ave., Springfield, IL 62794. Returning gardeners must complete their application and payment by June 1 to retain their previous plots.
This year introduces a new event: a Pumpkin Weigh Off competition during the Illinois Product Fall Market on Saturday, October 11. Participants can compete in three divisions: Open; Youth up to 14 years; and FFA and 4H members, with trophies and prizes awarded in each category.
Weather permitting, the Community Garden will open on Saturday, March 8. For more information about this year's activities or inquiries regarding participation, visit the IDOA website or contact them at (217) 785-8300.
