Cornelius "Neil" John Venhuizen, WWII Veteran and Musician, Passes Away at 91

South Holland, Illinois - Feb. 23, 2025 - Cornelius "Neil" John Venhuizen, age 91, of South Holland, IL, passed away on Sunday, February 23, 2025. Beloved husband of Joanne Venhuizen, nee Huisenga, and father of Bernard (Rosalinda) Venhuizen, Ruth (William) Martin, and Gayle (Dave) Beezhold. Neil was the proud grandfather/opa of Cornelius, Alison, Melissa, Joshua, Zachary, and Jason; and delighted great-grandfather of Annabelle, Eloise, Mason, John, and Harrison.

Born in Warffum, the Netherlands, Neil's life was influenced by the Nazi occupation and post-war experiences of resistance in his hometown. His service in the Dutch Merchant Marines and later in the U.S. Army provided him with diverse experiences across Europe before settling in the U.S. He built a family in South Holland, IL, instilling a love for learning, music, and community in his children and grandchildren.

Neil was dedicated to construction, advancing from pouring concrete foundations to becoming a foreman on the John Hancock Building in Chicago. A talented musician, he played a variety of instruments and shared his gifts with numerous bands and ensembles. He volunteered with multiple organizations, including the US Naval Sea Cadets, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Christ Cares Ministries. A committed family man, Neil cherished his time spent with loved ones, engaging in various activities together.

A celebration of Neil's life and a witness to the resurrection will take place on Sunday, March 2, 2025 at Smits Funeral Home, with visitation from 12pm until 3pm, and the funeral service at 3pm. A committal with honor guard will be held on Monday, March 3 at Abraham Lincoln Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, gifts can be made to Cottage Grove Christian Reformed Church.
