To ensure public safety, the Illinois Tollway has implemented lane and ramp closures following an incident where a truck hauling construction equipment struck the Illinois Route 83 Bridge over the Reagan Memorial Tollway I-88. The closures are in place while engineers assess the damage to the bridge. Traffic delays are anticipated in the area.

According to the Illinois State Police, a construction excavator being transported by a truck/trailer hit the underside of the bridge while traveling westbound on I-88 shortly after 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 27.

The current closures include:

- The ramp from westbound I-88 to southbound Illinois Route 83

- One northbound lane and shoulder on Illinois Route 83

- A portion of the left turn lane on northbound Illinois Route 83

These measures are necessary for conducting a structural evaluation and planning repairs. The Illinois Tollway is coordinating with the Illinois Department of Transportation and local municipalities. Driver safety remains a priority as assessments and repair planning continue.

Drivers heading to southbound Illinois Route 83 should seek alternate routes, as traffic delays are expected on this route. Options for exiting from westbound I-88 include using 22nd Street/Cermak Road or Highland Avenue.

The Illinois Tollway operates as a user-fee system without state or federal funding for maintenance and operations. It manages 294 miles of roadways across 12 counties in Northern Illinois, including several major tollways such as the Reagan Memorial Tollway (I-88).
