The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) is actively participating in the 2025 Pride Month celebrations throughout June. The department is highlighting its programs and services aimed at enhancing the health and wellness of the LGBTQIA+ community in Illinois.

A significant event during this month is Chicago's Pride Parade on June 29, where IDPH will be marching under the theme "United in Pride." Information about various Pride festivals across the state can be accessed through Enjoy Illinois.

"During Pride Month, IDPH is extremely proud to join the LGBTQIA+ community and its allies across Illinois in celebrating the strength we gain through unity and common purpose," stated IDPH Director Dr. Sameer Vohra. He emphasized the importance of individuals being their authentic selves and expressed pride in partnering with organizations to improve LGBTQIA+ health and well-being.

IDPH has implemented several initiatives to address specific health concerns within the LGBTQIA+ community. Earlier this year, they facilitated access to HIV prevention medication, PrEP, by allowing pharmacists to dispense it without a doctor's prescription.

Additionally, changes have been made by IDPH’s Division of Vital Records to simplify altering sex designation on birth records. Now, individuals can change their designation by submitting an affidavit along with necessary documents and a fee. This process no longer requires a physician's form. The department has also collaborated with Equality Illinois to make parental designation fields on birth records more inclusive for same-sex and transgender couples.

IDPH continues to provide various programs addressing primary health issues faced by the LGBTQIA+ community, ensuring these services are delivered equitably in welcoming environments.

To promote inclusivity further, IDPH trains staff and partners on culturally sensitive language use and adherence to non-discrimination laws. They have also adopted gender-neutral restrooms for all single-stall facilities statewide.
