The ramp connecting the westbound Reagan Memorial Tollway (I-88) to southbound Illinois Route 83 is set to reopen tonight, June 10. This reopening comes as repair work continues on the Illinois Route 83 Bridge. Following the reopening, one northbound lane, the shoulder, and part of the left turn lane on northbound Illinois Route 83 will remain closed. All lanes on southbound Illinois Route 83 and I-88 will stay open.
The ongoing work involves removing and replacing damaged beams and repairing damage caused when a construction excavator struck the underside of the Illinois Route 83 Bridge in late May. The repair work is expected to continue into fall. Additional closures and detours for the westbound I-88 to southbound Illinois Route 83 ramp will be necessary later this year to facilitate new bridge beam placement.
The Tollway is coordinating these repairs with the Illinois Department of Transportation and local municipalities.
The Illinois Tollway operates as a user-fee system without state or federal funding for maintenance and operations. It manages 294 miles of roadways across 12 counties in Northern Illinois, including several major tollways such as the Reagan Memorial Tollway (I-88) and others.
