BCBS antitrust lawsuit reaches $2.8 billion settlement; claim deadline set for July

After 12 years of legal proceedings, a settlement has been reached in the Blue Cross and Blue Shield (BCBS) antitrust lawsuit. The class-action suit, filed in 2013 under the title "In re: Blue Cross Blue Shield Antitrust Litigation," alleged that BCBS plans engaged in anti-competitive practices. These included dividing the United States into exclusive "Service Areas" and agreeing not to compete across regions, which allegedly led to fixed prices for healthcare services.

The settlement involves a $2.8 billion fund intended to compensate affected providers such as physicians and group practices. Eligible parties are those who billed for services provided to patients insured by BCBS between July 24, 2008, and October 4, 2024.
