In a significant legal development, MultiPlan, along with several major insurance companies, is facing a lawsuit filed by thousands of physicians, hospitals, and healthcare providers. The plaintiffs include the Illinois State Medical Society (ISMS) and the American Medical Association (AMA). They accuse MultiPlan and its partners of violating federal antitrust laws by allegedly fixing prices for out-of-network services in the United States.

The case, known as In Re: MultiPlan Healthcare Insurance Provider Litigation, involves some of the largest healthcare payers such as United Healthcare, Cigna, Aetna, Anthem, and Blue Cross Blue Shield entities. If successful, this lawsuit could entitle healthcare practices to substantial damages and compensation from these companies.

Healthcare providers interested in joining the lawsuit can do so either through court-appointed law firms or by hiring their own legal representation. The appointed co-lead counsel includes Matthew M. Lavin from Arnall Golden Gregory representing AMA and ISMS; Hunter J. Shkolnik from Napoli Shkolnik Attorneys at Law; and Christopher A. Seeger from Seeger Weiss LLP.

The law firms have assured potential plaintiffs that no legal fees will be incurred until a case is won. Providers are also offered a free case evaluation via an electronic form.

Without taking legal action, healthcare professionals may continue to face pressure to accept MultiPlan’s pricing algorithms and experience systematic underpayment for out-of-network services.
