Jeanne Ives, a former Illinois state representative and founder of Breakthrough Ideas, expressed concerns over public safety in Illinois following the release and subsequent re-arrest of an undocumented immigrant accused of murder. She said that residents cannot rely on Governor J.B. Pritzker for their safety after the intervention by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) was necessary to apprehend the suspect.
"Pritzker and the Democrats who run the state could care less about public safety," said Ives, Former IL State Rep., Founder of Breakthrough Ideas. "Gonzalez should have never been released as an illegal alien. Thankfully, Meghan Bos' mother raised this issue to Republican state and federal officials and Trump's DHS, who re-arrested him. Whether it's public safety or reining in government spending, Illinoisans need to look to Trump for help because the Pritzker administration is AWOL."
According to Fox News, ICE agents re-arrested Jose Luis Mendoza-Gonzalez, a 52-year-old Mexican national residing in Waukegan, Illinois. He was accused of decapitating 37-year-old Megan Bos and storing her body in a bleach-filled container. Initially arrested in April on charges including concealing and abusing a corpse and obstruction of justice, Mendoza-Gonzalez was released by Lake County Judge Randie Bruno after his first court appearance. ICE later apprehended him again on July 19 at a Chicago market, where he now remains in federal custody.
Authorities reported that Bos was last seen in February and declared missing in early March. Her body was discovered on Mendoza-Gonzalez’s property, allegedly stored for nearly two months. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) criticized the suspect's initial release as "absolutely repulsive," given the severity of the crime. Illinois Republicans such as state Rep. Tom Weber and Antioch Mayor Scott Gartner criticized the state's bail reform law, known as the SAFE-T Act, arguing it facilitated Mendoza-Gonzalez’s release despite his potential flight risk as an undocumented immigrant.
In response to these events, the Illinois Freedom Caucus praised ICE's actions for re-arresting an illegal immigrant accused of homicide through a Facebook post. The caucus criticized Governor Pritzker's policies, claiming he has "failed to protect the people of Illinois." They condemned what they described as "pro-criminal policies" after a judge released the suspect who was later apprehended by ICE agents again. The group commended federal authorities for intervening where they believe state leadership failed and urged Pritzker to prioritize public safety over shielding criminal offenders.
