Governor J.B. Pritzker has signed House Bill 1141, establishing a requirement for group and individual accident and health insurance policies, as well as managed care plans, to cover medically necessary anesthesia services for any procedure included in the policy.

The law was developed by the Illinois Society of Anesthesiologists and supported by the Illinois State Medical Society (ISMS). It includes a provision that insurers cannot deny payment or full reimbursement for anesthesia services solely because the duration of care exceeded a preset time limit.

House Bill 1141 took effect on August 1, 2025. The legislation applies to private state-regulated commercial insurance plans.

Questions regarding the new law can be directed to ISMS Senior Vice President of State Legislative Affairs Erin O'Brien via email.
