Illinois House Republicans have expressed concerns about public safety in Chicago, urging Governor J.B. Pritzker and the city's mayor to address crime more seriously. The Republican caucus criticized the governor for opposing federal aid, emphasizing that residents do not feel safe.

In recent months, Chicago has experienced a notable decline in violent crime. Homicides have decreased by approximately 32% through early August 2025 compared to the same period in 2024, suggesting a potential turning point in addressing the city's long-standing safety challenges. Despite these improvements, public sentiment remains uneasy, as highlighted by the Illinois House GOP's message that "the people of Chicago don’t feel safe." This situation illustrates how perceptions of insecurity can persist even amid improving crime statistics.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, citing a report from the Council on Criminal Justice, most major crime categories—including homicides and sexual assaults—are now below pre-pandemic levels. Violent crime has significantly reduced compared to 2019, affirming the efficacy of targeted community and city-led strategies. However, certain crimes like car theft and shoplifting remain higher than pre-pandemic averages.

Additional city data indicates that through July 2025, Chicago recorded 240 homicides—a significant drop from approximately 353 during the same period in 2024—positioning the city for its lowest annual homicide total in five years. Alongside a 37% decrease in non-fatal shootings and an overall drop of roughly 25–30% in violent index crimes, these figures reflect reduced levels of violence across neighborhoods. These improvements coincide with political conflict over state-level resistance to federal crime aid.

The Illinois House Republican Caucus (IL House GOP) is known for representing constituents across Illinois and frequently issues policy statements on public safety and other governance issues. According to their official site, they aim to influence legislation and champion conservative values throughout the state.
