The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) has introduced a new licensure process for internationally trained physicians. The initiative is intended to help address health care workforce needs in the state by allowing International Medical Graduate physicians (IMGs) to practice under supervision as they work toward full medical licensure.

Under the new system, IMGs can apply for an International Medical Graduate Limited License, which permits them to work under a supervising physician at an approved sponsoring institution for two years. After completing this period, they may seek an International Medical Graduate Restricted License, granting more independence in designated health professional shortage areas and populations. Following another two years of practice with the restricted license, IMGs are eligible to apply for a full Illinois medical license.

"Today marks a transformative step forward in the landscape of health care in Illinois,” said IDFPR Secretary Mario Treto, Jr. “This new process opens doors for skilled professionals to provide their expertise to the people of Illinois while ensuring they receive the support and supervision necessary for success. Together, we are strengthening Illinois’ health care system and embracing the rich diversity of medical knowledge from around the globe."

The department states that this pathway aims to both expand access to care and utilize diverse medical talent available among internationally trained physicians.
