The Illinois General Assembly will reconvene in Springfield on October 14, following Columbus Day. Lawmakers are expected to meet for two periods: October 14-16 and October 28-30.

No official agenda has been released by legislative leaders for the fall session. However, several issues may be discussed. These include proposals to raise taxes to support public transit systems in the Chicago area and a package that could give the Illinois Commerce Commission more authority over the energy sector while directing more investment toward renewable energy.

Other topics that may come up are potential changes to state laws that currently limit cooperation with federal immigration enforcement, expanding prevailing wage requirements to more private projects, and extending Illinois’ SALT pass-through provisions.

The initial week of the session is likely to involve closed-door meetings among lawmakers as they discuss legislative packages. Key votes on these issues are expected during the second meeting period at the end of October.

A recent call-to-action urged residents to ask legislators to oppose a proposed retail delivery tax intended to provide financial support for Chicago-area public transit systems.
