House Republicans recently announced a campaign to enact term limits for elected officials.
Officials plan to use “The People’s Pledge” to demand accountability in Illinois state government and remove House Speaker Mike Madigan from office.
Madigan has served in office for almost 50 years, which is far too long Republicans said in a statement announcing the pledge.
“Mike Madigan has been in office for over 47 years, driving Illinois into the ground and personally profiting along the way,” House Republican Organization Political Director Joe Woodward said in the statement. "That’s wrong. With ‘The People’s Pledge,’ Illinois voters can hold candidates for state representative accountable by demanding they support term limits for lawmakers and constitutional officers and oppose Madigan as House Speaker.”
Republicans also accused Madigan and his attorneys of continually blocking attempts by voters to get term limits on a ballot.
The pledge asks those who sign it to support a term limits referendum and vote for someone other than Madigan for Speaker of the House.
“These commonsense actions will take power away from the Chicago political machine and put it squarely back in the hands of the people of Illinois — where it belongs,” the pledge states. “They will represent a critical step in ending the corruption and cronyism that has plagued Illinois for decades and will once again make service to the people the top priority of state government.”
