ILLINOIS ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY: Illinois EPA Announces Fall 2018 Household Hazardous Waste Collection Events

Illinois Environmental Protection Agency issued the following announcement on Sept. 12.

Illinois EPA Director Alec Messina today announced the Agency has scheduled household hazardous waste collections for the fall of 2018. Illinois EPA household hazardous waste collections are held to encourage residents to safely dispose of unused or leftover household products commonly found in homes. Five collection sites are confirmed for the fall. Details for additional fall collections are currently being finalized and will be announced at a later date.

"These collections provide a great service to our residents while ensuring hazardous chemicals and products are disposed of properly to protect the environment," said Director Messina. "Illinois EPA's partnerships with local governments make the household hazardous waste collections possible for Illinois residents."

The fall 2018 one-day collections are scheduled for:

• September 15 Princeton, Bureau County Farm Bureau, 535 Elm Place, Bureau County

• September 29 Danville, Danville Area Community College, 2000 East Mail St., Vermilion County

• October 6  Vandalia, Fayette County Health Dept., 509 West Edwards St., Fayette County

• October 13 Oswego, Park and Ride Parking Lot, Station Rd. (North of Mill Rd.), Kendall County

• October 27 Decatur, Progress City USA, E. Mound Road, Macon County

One-day collections are open to all Illinois residents and operate from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on the above scheduled Saturdays.

Residents are encouraged to bring chemical cleaners, oil-based paints, thinners, antifreeze, motor oil, gasoline, kerosene, weed killers, insecticides and pesticides, old or outdated medication, and similar hazardous household products. Fluorescent and other high-intensity discharge lamps may also be brought to the collections. Items not accepted include latex paint, explosives, propane tanks, fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, agricultural chemicals and business wastes. In addition to the one-day collections, the following long-term collection facilities are available for disposal of household hazardous waste throughout the year:
