The Illinois Republican Party this week officially added its voice to those already warning that Gov. J.B. Pritzker's minimum wage bill, passed yesterday in the Senate, will be a disaster for the state.
“Pritzker’s minimum wage hike will crush small businesses and will cost taxpayers at least a billion dollars a year once the plan is fully implemented, and that’s not even a complete estimate," Illinois Republican Party Spokesman Aaron DeGroot was quoted in a press release. "Pritzker’s administration has not disclosed the full amount of increased spending his wage hike would require. Pritzker’s reckless budgeting will cost taxpayers and small businesses dearly. It is yet another Pritzker proposal that will bankrupt Illinois.”
The bill to raise Illinois' minimum wage passed the state Senate on Thursday by a vote of 38 to 18.
The GOP accused Pritzker of ignoring concerns voiced by Republican lawmakers and business leaders and, instead, using the same form of governing "that put Illinois in the poor fiscal condition it’s in," the press release said.
The Illinois Chamber of Commerce also opposes the minimum wage increase.
