Republican Mark Curran’s motivations for wanting to serve in Washington, D.C. are endless.

“Career politicians like Dick Durbin are destroying the country and I feel what he and other Democrats are doing now have us at a crossroads,” Curran told DuPage Policy Journal of the man he is looking to oust as Illinois senator. “The inroads on our liberties, the way the wealthiest Americans and richest corporations now have access to Congress to the point of writing rules that benefit themselves while destroying the middle class are too much. You look at Durbin, and all he’s done is standby and watch jobs leave Illinois as the state falls to ruins.”

Having served as Lake County Sheriff from 2006 to 2018 where his spending came in under budget each of those years, Curran feels his combination of experience and discipline are just what the state needs to get back on track.

“I’m going to be there for the middle class and small businesses,” Curran added. “I’m not going to be someone just asking what’s in the best interest of my party, but rather the state and the country. So many politicians get to Washington and lose their connection with constituents. Durbin is the No.2 Democrat in the Senate. His primary objective has become appeasing other Democrats as citizens and businesses get lost in the mix.”

Besides what he sees as his more favorable policies, Curran thinks he also has all the intangibles needed to knock off the longtime incumbent.

“I have a significant base of crossover voters,” he told the Chicago Tribune. “I have earned the respect of local media and I have been endorsed by all newspapers in every primary and general election. My name is well-respected in the Chicagoland area. I have the most diverse experience having been a Constitutional Law professor; a small business owner; a county, state and federal prosecutor; and a three-term sheriff of the third-largest county in Illinois.”

As Election Day draws closer, Curran said he is confident his message is resonating with voters who have grown weary of all the division and dysfunction.

“My background is one of diversity and I feel can bridge gaps between all kinds of constituency groups,” he said.  “It’s what I’ve done and am up to the challenge of doing again.”
