An independent data scientist and MIT graduate is criticizing mainstream media for ignoring the alarming truth about the Covid infection rate in Illinois.

In a recent Twitter post, Youyang Gu, who created the covid19-projections.com to keep the public informed about the pandemic, compared the number of new Covid cases in Illinois to Florida’s numbers.

“Last week, Illinois reported 15,415 cases in a single day, more than Florida ever did in a single day.” Gu wrote on Nov. 24. “This is despite Illinois' population being 40% lower.”

Gu attached an image to his post that showed a spike in confirmed Covid cases in Illinois - with the number nearly doubling in the month of November.

Gu went on to call out the media for not giving the issue as much attention as it deserves..

“Many of you probably did not know the dire situation in Illinois. That's because no mainstream media chose to report it,” he said.

In another Twitter post posted on the same day, Gu said the situation in Illinois is unprecedented.

“No other state has ever averaged 12,000 cases a day for a whole week. Not even Florida (1.7x pop), California (3x pop), and Texas (2.3x pop),” he wrote. “For deaths per capita, Illinois also exceeded the peak deaths in Florida twice, once in May and once again now. So why is this not news?”
