Illinois Republican Party Chair Don Tracy disapproved of the governor’s signing of House Bill 3653.
In a statement, Tracy said that in signing the bill, “the governor is willfully undermining public safety - endangering citizens, emboldening criminals, and making Illinois less safe for families. The bill legalizes resistance to arrest in many cases and allows anonymous complaints to end a police officer's career.”
The omnibus criminal justice reform legislation, ends cash bail for non-violent offenders state-wide, requiring all Illinois police officers to wear body cameras, a ban on chokeholds, new police officer certification and decertification guidelines, eliminating collective bargaining rights, and an end to suspended license for failure to pay, among others.
“Don’t just take it from me. Every police association in this state has condemned this bill.” Tracy said.
Opponents to the bill say it hampers the ability of police officers to protect the community and it brings criminals back on the streets right away.
“Pritzker’s signing of this bill has ensured that police protection in Illinois will become more passive and criminals will become more aggressive,” the GOP Chair added.
“It’s no surprise that in a recent statewide poll of law enforcement, 66% of police officers will now consider retiring early. Standing firmly behind the thin blue line, Illinois Republicans are appalled at the signing of this bill representing an all-out attack on both public safety and the brave men and women who provide it.”
HB 3653 is now known as the SAFE-T Act (Safety Accountability Fairness Equity Today)
