Being called out for being in favor of impeaching the former president does not come as a surprise to Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill).
Donald Trump made his first public speech since stepping down as president at the Conservative Political Action Conference on Sunday and he used that platform to urge Republicans to remove every Republican lawmaker who voted to impeach or convict him.
“Get rid of them all,” Trump strongly said, after calling out the names of Republican House members and senators who agreed to impeach/convict him, including Sen. Liz Cheney and Kinzinger.
“I’m not surprised by anything he said,” Kinzinger said. “I expected to be called out by name. I’m surprised it’s taken this long.”
Cheney (R-Wyo.), the House Republican Conference chair, had earlier said that Trump should not speak at the conference, creating a clash with House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) who said Trump should.
Cheney has been censured by Republicans from her state, but the Illinois GOP is not denouncing Kinzinger.
ILGOP Chairman Don Tracy earlier called for party unity. He said the party will not be censuring Congressman Kinzinger. He said his goal is to unite the party and stop the circular firing squad.”
Kinzinger does not intend to leave the GOP, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.
