Before House Bill 3653 was signed into law, many law enforcement agencies and Republicans raised their concerns and expressed their opposition.
“Don’t just take it from me. Every police association in this state has condemned this bill,” Illinois Republican Party Chair Don Tracy said.
HB3653 has eliminated cash bail, among many other reforms in the police and criminal justice system.
State Rep. David Welter (R-Morris) said that “House Bill 3653 enhances protections for individuals charged with violent crimes at the expense of the victims of those crimes.”
He had earlier arranged a meeting with Gov. J.B. Pritzker and Cassandra Tanner-Miller, a domestic violence survivor.
"I made a plea to him prior to him signing this bill and to hold off and to actually think about victims," Tanner-Miller told Fox News co-host, Dana Perino, during an interview on "America’s Newsroom."
"He absolutely let me down," she said.
Tanner-Miller’s 18-month-old son was shot and killed by her estranged husband, earlier that day had been released on an I-bond.
House Republican Leader Jim Durkin said that “this flawed bill will make it more difficult for law enforcement to keep communities safe and gives more rights to criminals than to their victims.”
Despite the strong opposition to this bill, despite hearing the story of Tanner-Miller first-hand, the governor signed the bill.
