The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) has signed off on a plan that will allow more fans to watch outdoor high school sporting events across the state this spring.

In a tweet posted earlier this month, IHSA officials announced new guidelines from the Illinois Department of Public Health that paves the way for larger crowds. Going forward, IHSA schools located in regions in Phase 4 of COVID-19 mitigation can increase spectators from 50 people to up to 20% capacity of the venue's capacity.

In Illinois, all counties are now in Phase 4 of Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s Rescue Illinois plan.

The increase in permitted attendance is only for outdoor sports, such as boys soccer and football, with the latter set to kick off its season on March 19.

High school sports have been forced to the sidelines across the state for the last year as part of Pritzker’s mitigation plan aimed at slowing the spread of the virus.
