E. Student Representative Report by Saad Qureshi from Metea Valley High School

Saad Qureshi shared his report with the Board as follows:

Good Evening! My name is Saad Qureshi, and I am the class of 2023 Executive Board representative for Metea Valley Student Government. I’m very excited to join you tonight!

The PSAT was successfully administered to 430 juniors on Wednesday, October 13. Good luck to our Mustangs and their future endeavors!

Student Government

Homecoming week was very exciting and packed full of fun starting off with a color event, chalk the walk, an apple cider morning treat, and two great outdoor pep assemblies.

The homecoming dance included a DJ in the stadium accompanied by food trucks that included hot dogs, tamales, and funnel cakes.

Fine Arts

Congratulations to our 50 Metea Valley student musicians on their acceptance and participation in the Illinois Music Education Association District 9 Concert and Jazz Festivals. Our students completed an audition with musicians from other high schools in the western suburbs. These students will be performing at the Concert Festival at Dundee-Crown High School on November 13 and the Jazz Festival at Hampshire High School on November 20. Keep up the awesome work Mustangs!

The fall concerts that music students have put together were amazing!

The theater program has been preparing for the fall play, Clue, since the start of the school year. The play Clue is a comedic murder mystery that is based off the board game and movie. Over 70 members have been preparing for this show. Special thanks to the Tech crew for making everything work on and off the stage.

Athletics

The men's golf team sent five golfers to Sectionals and then had three state qualifiers; Kyle B, Aman S, and Arjun V. Lots of program records were set, and the boys finished 2nd in Conference.

The men’s soccer team finished their season in the Regional Championship game this past Friday. They finished 2nd in the conference. Their hard work was recognized throughout the season from coaches and other athletes. Awesome work Mustangs!

Football finished their season 4th in Conference, and they defeated WVHS and DeKalb. They were a great group of athletes who gave it their all on both sides of the ball.

Women's volleyball finished their regular season 33-2 and are Conference Champs. They start the MV Regionals this Tuesday at 5:30p.m. as the #1 seed in the Oswego Sectional. Good luck lady Mustangs!

Both cheer and dance teams performed extremely well at home and away. Both teams are excited for the competition season this Winter.

Our Special Olympics team were gold medalists in unified soccer! They hope to continue their dominance into the basketball and swim season this Winter.

Stop by the athletic area and see all the hardware our hard-working teams have won this fall!

That is all I have for the November Board Report. Thanks, everyone! Until next time, GO GO MUSTANGS!

5. Consent Agenda and Superintendent Report

Information:

A. Superintendent Report

Dr. Adrian Talley presented the Superintendent Report to the Board of Education as follows:

Ms. Donahue, members of the Board of Education, and the Indian Prairie Community, I will start my comments tonight by sharing sad news. One of our teachers, Ms. Jocelyn Monis, who taught at Gombert, passed away early last week. Ms. Monis was married to Rich Monis a teacher at Neuqua Valley. She was hired in 2007 and worked the whole time at Gombert. She served as a Reading Improvement teacher, Kindergarten teacher, and a 2nd grade teacher. She also served on Gombert’s Instructional Leadership Team and oversaw the Kindergarten Readiness Club. May her family know how much she will be missed and that she played a critical role in helping to share the lives of children she saw.

Indian Prairie has been working with our local partners on establishing a vaccine clinic for children. We expect that now that the FDA has authorized the COVID-19 vaccination for children age 5 -11 and the CDC will soon provide approval, vaccinations will start soon. Once we have finalized our dates and times, we will share that information on our website. Some clinics may take place in conjunction with other school districts or may take place within Indian Prairie. Though we know that the vaccination is voluntary, we do want to make the process of getting the vaccine as easy as possible for our families who wish to get the vaccination.

November has been designated as Native American Heritage Month. This year’s proclamation from the White House reads in part, “During National Native American Heritage Month, we celebrate the countless contributions of Native peoples past and present, honor the influence they have had on the advancement of our Nation, and recommit ourselves to upholding trust and treaty responsibilities, strengthening Tribal sovereignty, and advancing Tribal self-determination.” Our schools will incorporate lessons related to Native Americans as part of their instructional program.

As many of you know our Executive Director of Equity became vacant when the person filling the position took a similar position in a different district. Though we advertised the position, we have decided for now that we will not fill the position. Rather we will work in house to continue the work related to equity as well as work with an outside agency to support us in our equity plan. Later in December we will post the position again to fill the position with someone starting July 1st. We still are committed to the work of equity and ensuring that all students have access and that barriers are taken away for our students in their academic achievements.

Board Policy 6:160 English Learners

Terminology

ELL = English Language Learning

ELs = English Learners

LEP = Limited English Proficient (Used for data management)

ESL = English as a Second Language

TBE = Transitional Bilingual Education

DBE = Developmental Bilingual Education

Terminology

WIDA = In 2002 a grant provided initial funding for the organization that would become WIDA. Three states were involved in the grant: Wisconsin (WI), Delaware (D), and Arkansas (A), so the acronym WIDA was chosen for the name. At the last minute, however, Arkansas dropped out, and World-class Instructional Design and Assessment was created to fit the acronym. As WIDA grew; however, the original name no longer adequately described its mission. Recently, WIDA decided to stop using the acronym definition. Now WIDA just means WIDA.

B. Legislative Advocacy Update – LD

Ms. Laurie Donahue reported that she and Dr. Talley attended the LEND meeting (Legislative Education Network of DuPage). There was a lot of conversation regarding the House Bill 2778; Teacher/Administrator Leave. The bill was passed by both the House and the Senate and has been pulled out of concern for a VETO at the Governors desk. LEND and IASB are opposed of this bill. More information will be provided in the future as it comes to the board’s attention.

LEND also has three Spring priorities that were discussed:

Evidence Based Funding

Bus Drivers Shortage

Tax Incremental Formatting

Discussion:

C. Board of Education Update – LD

Mr. Mark Rising attended the Large District meeting and informed the community that the Health Care Right of Conscience Act has passed. Also, IASB (Illinois Association of School Boards) was not happy with a letter sent to the President of the United States from NSBA (National School Board Association). IASB will be holding a meeting the first week of November to discuss the actions that should be taken against NSBA.

On the Federal Level, the school districts need to pay attention to the following information:

Infrastructure Bill

Possible money can be used for electric school buses, removal of lead pipes in schools, broadband, and infrastructure for schools.

Reconciliation Bill

Money towards school infrastructure and child nutrition.

Cybersecurity Act

President signed the Act and large school districts will soon be receiving a large tool kit.

Ms. Laurie Donahue called a meeting in early December with IASB and school districts within the area to keep the strong relationship that we and the other districts have with IASB. More information to follow.
