The April 20 Illinois State Board of Education meeting received a prank call during the meeting's public comment portion.
“Our next speaker is Brandon Lessgo. Brandon is speaking to us on matters of quarantine. His organization is concerned citizen and he’s requesting to speak via phone. Brandon? Brandon Lessgo. Brandon Lessgo,” the speaker said. "Brandon if you can hear us please feel free to send written comment to us and we’re going to proceed.”
The name used was a variation of "Let’s Go Brandon," used to insult President Joe Biden.
The Associated Press called the phrase “a stand-in for swearing at Joe Biden.”
The hearing was held at 10 a.m.
The instructions for phoning in were clear.
“Individuals who wish to sign up for public participation may complete 1) an online form that will be available from 8:30 a.m. until the start of the meeting on April 20, or 2) sign in on a public participation sign-in sheet that will be available at 100 N First St., Springfield, Illinois from 8:30 a.m. until the start of the meeting. Participants will be able to review the guidelines and indicate if they wish to speak in person or via phone,” the agenda reads.
A congressional candidate in Colorado – Dave “Let’s Go Brandon” Williams – recently sued to include the phrase as his nickname on the ballot, claiming he had used the name since last year.
“It represents a disgust of out-of-control government,” that candidate told The Hill. “It means we’re not going to take it anymore.”
