Illinois came in 22nd among the 50 states and the District of Columbia in a new study by a sales agent of the telecommunications firm CenturyLink, showing which states are most inundated with the Christmas spirit in 2022.
The Prairie State improved its position in the Christmas spirit ranking this year after coming in 36th in 2021 and 33rd the year before. This year marks GetCenturyLink.com’s fifth annual ranking on Christmas cheer nationwide.
The study measured Christmas spirit by examining 10 metrics in two primary categories: Christmas-themed online activity over the past year and Christmas-related cultural markers. The first category included Google searches for the terms “Christmas movies” and “Gingerbread houses,” while the cultural markers included Christmas tree farms per capita and charitable giving by state residents.
The company also employed Pollfish, a marketing tool, to survey 1,000 Americans about their activities and attitudes about celebrating Christmas in 2022.
New Hampshire claimed the No. 1 spot in the ranking for two years in a row, while Washington, D.C., finished last for three years in a row, the study said.
