Illinois State Board of Education, State Education Equity Committee (Learning Conditions Subcommittee) met Aug. 10.

Here are the minutes provided by the committee:

WELCOME AND ROLL CALL

Dr. Nakia Hall called the meeting to order and asked Joshua Peters to take the roll.

UPDATE ON STATEWIDE EQUITY SYMPOSIUM 

Dr. Nakia Hall shared updates on the Statewide Equity Symposium. A date has been established and times have been proposed. The official date and time is October 4th from 10a.m. - 3p.m. There was discussion on the proposal forms and breakout sessions. There will be another call at a later date with feedback and comments. 

REVIEW OF SUBCOMMITTEE RECCOMENDATIONS 

The subcommittee discussed establishing a direction for future recommendations. Based on the past recommendations, the subcommittee discussed gathering feedback, the relevancy and applicability of the recommendations, and alignment to agency’s direction. Some topics the recommendations previously focused on were exclusionary discipline, bias training, and implicit instruction. Topics of interest for future recommendations are school safety and student safety as well as the Racism-Free Schools Act. 

PREPARATION FOR LEARNING CONDITIONS SECTIONS OF PROGRESS REPORT 

The subcommittee discussed the timeline and direction of the Progress Report. The report needs to be filed with the General Assembly by December 15th . They discussed feedback on recommendations in order to determine what recommendations are relevant today. They want to refine recommendations, so they are applicable in current times.
