The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) and the Amateur Trapshooting Association (ATA) have extended their agreement to host the Grand American at the World Shooting and Recreational Complex in Sparta through 2036. IDNR Director Natalie Phelps Finnie expressed enthusiasm about the extension, stating, "I'm thrilled we were able to extend this contract for another decade." She highlighted the event's significance as an economic driver for Randolph County and southern Illinois.

The Grand American is recognized as the largest and oldest shooting event of its kind, featuring over 20 events and drawing more than 5,000 competitors and spectators globally each year. Since its initial hosting at the World Shooting Complex in 2006, it has contributed an estimated $25 million to $30 million annually to the local economy.

Lynn Gipson, executive director of the ATA, remarked on his long-standing involvement with the event since its inception in Sparta. "We look forward to the continuation of our wonderful relationship with IDNR for many more years," he said.

Scheduled from July 31 to August 10 in 2024, the upcoming Grand American will see over four million targets thrown during its course. The World Shooting and Recreational Complex is part of IDNR's sites, offering various activities such as trap and skeet shooting, sporting clays, camping, and fishing opportunities.

Skip Klinger was appointed executive director of the complex in December. He brings experience from his previous roles as president and CEO of Palmyra Sportsmen for 32 years and executive director of the Pennsylvania State Shotgunning Association for two years. Klinger stated his excitement about leading a site he knows well from past Grand events: "My team and I are already making plans to ensure the 2024 Grand is the best one so far."

The complex spans 1,600 acres and is open to visitors Wednesday through Sunday each week. Interested individuals can find a calendar of upcoming events online.
