Nearly $55 million in state grants have been allocated to support 111 local park projects across Illinois. Governor JB Pritzker announced the funding, aimed at helping communities acquire land and develop recreational facilities. The Open Space Land Acquisition and Development (OSLAD) program, administered by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, is in its 37th year.

Governor Pritzker emphasized his commitment to supporting community health through such initiatives. "With funding from the OLSAD program, municipalities across Illinois will have the opportunity to expand and improve local neighborhood parks through sport and recreational space, plants, playgrounds, and more," he stated.

This year marks a continuation of efforts to direct funds towards economically distressed areas. Thirty-two underserved locations will receive $18.7 million in grants. IDNR Director Natalie Phelps Finnie praised the governor's ongoing support for the OSLAD program: "An investment in the outdoors is an investment in the health and well-being of the people of Illinois."

The Carbondale Park District is one recipient of these grants. Plans include renovating Crispus Attucks Park with new playground equipment accessible to disabled individuals. Trey Anderson, executive director of the Carbondale Park District, expressed gratitude for being chosen for an OSLAD grant: "This project is much needed and will help the surrounding community by offering an upgraded play area for enhanced outdoor activity and community inclusion."

Harristown also received a grant to build its first public park and playground with various amenities. Mayor Evelyn Deverell shared her enthusiasm: "A community park has long been a hope for our residents... Our citizens and board of trustees will all work together to use these funds in a way that serves Harristown."

Peter Murphy from the Illinois Association of Park Districts commended state leaders for their support: "We commend Governor Pritzker and the General Assembly for their strong support and continued investment in local park and recreation projects that create opportunities for Illinois youth."

Several other projects across various counties were awarded grants as part of this initiative.
