Governor JB Pritzker, alongside the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), marked the completion of significant improvements on Interstate 57 in Chicago and its southern suburbs. This project is part of a broader initiative funded by the Rebuild Illinois capital program, aimed at enhancing infrastructure across the state.

The improvements on I-57 involved patching and resurfacing nearly 20 miles of roadway, as well as repairing two bridges along this vital corridor. Governor Pritzker emphasized the importance of these developments, stating, "After decades of neglect, we are delivering the kind of infrastructure improvements that Illinoisans have been waiting for." He noted that the $85 million investment over two years has resulted in job creation and a safer travel experience for those using I-57.

Work began in early 2022, focusing on sections from Steger Road to West County Line Road and from Interstate 294 to Halsted Street. The upgrades included new overhead expressway signs and ADA-compliant sidewalk ramps at rest areas. Additionally, weigh-in-motion scale and Bluetooth sensors were enhanced to support trucking activities. Structural repairs were also made to bridges over the Canadian National Railroad and Interstate 80.

Illinois Transportation Secretary Omer Osman highlighted the long-term benefits: "These improvements are not just creating a smoother ride, improving safety, and enhancing quality of life in one part of the state." He added that under Governor Pritzker's leadership, IDOT is investing taxpayer dollars wisely to maintain infrastructure while fostering economic growth.

Senator Napoleon Harris (D-Harvey) underscored I-57's role in national commerce: "The south suburbs is where goods move across the country." Representative Will Davis (D-Homewood) expressed pride in local advancements: "Today, we are celebrating new bridge decks and newly resurfaced roads."

Markham Mayor Roger Agpawa appreciated state efforts for safe travel through key corridors like Markham. Commissioner Monica Gordon acknowledged transportation equity initiatives that enhance quality of life in southern Cook County.

I-57 spans approximately 359 miles as Illinois' longest interstate highway. Rebuild Illinois aims to improve this route statewide with extensive investments totaling $33.2 billion over six years across various transportation modes.

Rebuild Illinois has achieved $12.1 billion worth of statewide enhancements on highways and bridges during its first four years. More information about ongoing projects can be found at IDOT's official website.
