Born on February 8, 1945, in Jos, Nigeria, to Roseline Erigbuaku and Michael Ezette Okwara, Helen was a trailblazer and a gifted athlete in her youth. She achieved widespread acclaim in Nigeria for her athletic prowess in javelin competitions, securing a spot on Nigeria's Olympic team.
After pursuing a career in nursing and midwifery in England, Helen arrived in the United States in 1969 with her husband, Dr. Godwin Okorafor. The couple built a life together, with Helen earning a PhD in Health Administration from Xavier University in Ohio while raising their four children: Ifeoma, Ngozi, Nnedi, and Emezie.
Known for her ambition, discipline, and brilliance, Dr. Helen Okorafor's academic achievements coexisted with her commitment to her family and community. She and her husband fostered an environment of love, joy, and purpose that radiated throughout the Chicagoland area. Helen's compassionate nature, unwavering commitment to service, and love for her American and Nigerian heritage defined her character.
In her devotion to community, Dr. Okorafor co-founded and led the Pan African Alliance, volunteered with the Special Olympics, and remained active in her local parish, Infant Jesus of Prague. Her legacy of service, love, and cultural pride extended to her passion for tennis and sportsmanship, which she shared with all who knew her.
Despite facing Alzheimer's disease in 2020, Dr. Okorafor navigated her challenges with grace and dignity, supported by her devoted family and friends. Her memory lives on as a beacon of kindness and love for the lives she touched.
Dr. Helen Okorafor is survived by her cherished children, Drs. Ifeoma and Nnedi, and Emezie (J.D.) Okorafor, along with her beloved grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Godwin, and daughter, Ngozi. Dr. Helen's remarkable legacy of compassion and service will resonate for generations to come.
