The Illinois State Museum is calling for judges and volunteers to participate in the upcoming student Illinois History Day competition, scheduled for May 1 at the Bank of Springfield Center. Judges will evaluate student projects, helping determine which students progress to the next competition level. While a history degree is not required, judges should be prepared to offer positive and constructive feedback. Training will be provided.
Volunteers are also needed for tasks such as wayfinding, greeting attendees, and assisting with event teardown. Last year’s event attracted 621 students.
Illinois History Day engages students from sixth through twelfth grades in project-based learning that involves research, analysis, and discovery. Students select a topic, conduct thorough research, and present their findings through various formats like exhibits or documentaries. Successful participants at regional contests advance to the state contest in Springfield, with winners moving on to the National History Day Contest in Washington, D.C., this June.
This year's theme is "rights and responsibilities in history," encouraging students to explore these concepts within their chosen topics. Jenn Edginton, Director of the Illinois State Museum, stated: "National History Day in Illinois is such an important program for middle and high school learners to gain skills and confidence in the history and humanity fields."
Those interested in volunteering or judging can reach out to Laura Mitchelle, the Illinois History Day state coordinator at laura.mitchelle@illinois.gov.
The roots of Illinois History Day trace back to 1947 when it began as a publication under different titles before evolving into its current format. The first fair occurred in 1963 before National History Day was established in 1974. In 2023, sponsorship transitioned officially to the Illinois State Museum.
