When individuals in Illinois purchase a fishing license, they contribute to more than just their own fishing activities. The revenue from these licenses supports conservation efforts, educational programs, and economic activities across the state. Starting March 1, Illinois residents can buy fishing licenses for the 2025 season.

According to Mike McClelland, chief of fisheries at the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), "The successful management of quality fishing opportunities relies on the commitment and support of anglers, and that starts with buying a fishing license." He emphasized that purchasing a license helps sustain sport fishing, hatchery production, and habitat enhancements for both current and future generations.

The IDNR's division of fisheries is primarily funded through the sale of fishing licenses and associated stamps. These vital programs do not receive funding from general state tax revenues. Instead, they rely on these sales to support research, management operations, hatchery functions, invasive species prevention, outreach initiatives, and more.

In addition to state funding sources, the Sport Fish Restoration Program provides financial support through a federal excise tax on purchases related to fishing equipment and outdoor accessories. This program allocates funds based on each state's land size and fishing license sales.

Fishing licenses for 2025 will be available online or at designated vendor locations starting March 1. Licenses for the previous year remain valid until March 31. A standard resident license costs $15. Anglers aged 16 and older must have a valid license unless exempt due to active military service or disability status.
