Governor JB Pritzker of Illinois declared March 31 as Transgender Day of Visibility, underscoring the state's commitment to protecting transgender individuals from discrimination. As part of this initiative, the Illinois Department of Human Rights (IDHR) released guidance to emphasize gender identity discrimination protections under state law.

Governor Pritzker remarked, "As Governor, it has been my mission to ensure that every Illinoisan lives without the fear of violence, prejudice, or discrimination." Lt. Governor Juliana Stratton highlighted the importance of legal inclusion, stating, "In Illinois you have a right to safely exist and be your most authentic self."

The state's human rights law, considered one of the most comprehensive in the nation, offers protections beyond federal standards. The Illinois Human Rights Act ensures equal treatment for transgender and LGBTQ+ individuals in various sectors, including employment, housing, financial credit, public services, healthcare, and education. IDHR Director Jim Bennett reinforced the state's dedication to upholding these protections, stating, "Illinois is clear on our commitment to protect all Illinoisans, ensuring transgender people are treated with dignity and respect in every aspect of life."

Examples of discrimination prohibited under the Illinois Human Rights Act include terminating an employee for being transgender, denying housing or credit based on gender identity, or refusing medical treatment. The guidance also outlines unacceptable practices such as restricting restroom access or prohibiting transgender girls from participating in female sports teams.

In 2019, Governor Pritzker issued an Executive Order to combat discrimination in schools, establishing the Affirming and Inclusive Schools Task Force. This task force directs educational institutions to support LGBTQ students comprehensively. IDHR continues to provide resources and guidance to ensure educational environments are free from discrimination.

The Illinois Department of Human Rights and Illinois Human Rights Commission remain vigilant in enforcing the state's anti-discrimination laws. Individuals believing they've experienced discrimination can file a complaint with IDHR. More information and the Governor's Proclamation can be accessed on the IDHR website.
