Data released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Illinois Department of Employment Security shows mixed trends in employment across Illinois' metropolitan areas over the past year. By February 2025, the unemployment rate had decreased in eleven metro areas and had risen in just one. Nonfarm jobs increased in seven metropolitan areas, while five reported a decline.

Deputy Governor Andy Manar commented on the findings, stating, "Today’s data report continues to underscore the strength of Illinois’ labor market with unemployment dropping and increases in jobs across most metro areas over the year." He also mentioned that "Illinois remains laser-focused on encouraging business development and expanding economic opportunities throughout the state."

The Elgin Metropolitan Division experienced the most significant increase in nonfarm jobs with a rise of 2.3%, amounting to 6,600 jobs. The Rockford Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) followed with a 1.2% increase, adding 1,700 jobs. Other areas showing job growth include the Kankakee MSA and the Peoria MSA. The Chicago-Naperville-Schaumburg Metropolitan Division added 18,600 jobs, a 0.5% increase.

Conversely, the Bloomington MSA recorded the largest decrease in jobs, down 2.2% or 2,100 positions. Reductions were also seen in the Decatur MSA, the Champaign-Urbana MSA, and the Illinois section of the Davenport-Moline-Rock Island IA-IL MSA. Job growth across the twelve metro areas was noted in sectors such as Private Education and Health Services, Retail Trade, and Government.

The Rockford MSA saw the most significant unemployment rate drop, decreasing by 1.2 points to 5.6%. Other areas with notable decreases include the Elgin Metro Division and the Lake County Metro Division. The Chicago Metro Division was the only area with an increase, reporting a 0.1 point rise to 5.3%.

The Illinois Department of Employment Security remains committed to providing essential employment services, including job fairs, labor market information, and unemployment insurance programs. Their full range of services and latest news is available at their website, IDES.Illinois.gov.
