The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is set to open a new off-highway vehicle park in southern Illinois. The Sahara Woods State Recreation Area, located near Carrier Mills in Saline County, will become accessible to enthusiasts on Friday, May 2.
"This park features Illinois' first state-managed off-highway vehicle trail system," announced officials. The area provides nearly 30 miles of two-way trails that cater to the rising demand for motorized recreational activities. Interested riders should note that the park operates from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday through Monday. Permits are available either for $20 per day or $65 for a four-day pass, which can be purchased online along with registration and a liability waiver.
To comply with regulations, off-highway vehicles must not exceed a width of 64 inches, as per the Illinois Motor Vehicle Code. Riders are also required to adhere to safety protocols.
The development of these trails was partially funded by federal grants alongside capital funds from IDNR. Situated five miles west of Harrisburg and south of Illinois Route 13, Sahara Woods occupies the land of a former coal mine, in operation from 1936 until 1995. The land was donated to the department in 1999, which undertook reclamation efforts to mitigate environmental and safety issues.
