Governor JB Pritzker, alongside the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO), Senator Dale Fowler, and local leaders, inaugurated a new enclosed horse arena at Giant City Stables in southern Illinois. This facility will provide year-round therapeutic horse-riding services for youth, veterans, and individuals with disabilities. It will also offer riding lessons and trail rides to park visitors.

"My administration has worked hard to invest in facilities and programming like the ones at Giant City State Park—those that are mission-focused and community-oriented," said Governor JB Pritzker. He highlighted the long-standing impact of Giant City Stables on individuals and communities through horse-riding activities.

Lt. Governor Juliana Stratton expressed her enthusiasm for the expansion made possible by community partnerships, including IDNR and DCEO. "With the opening of this new therapeutic arena, Giant City Stables is continuing their decades-long tradition of serving youth, veterans, and people with disabilities with dignity."

The project received $322,000 in funding from DCEO and IDNR, supplemented by private donors, the Illinois Conservation Foundation, and Laborers' International Union Local 773. The total cost amounted to approximately $430,000.

Senator Dale Fowler emphasized the significance of investing in Southern Illinois: "Today is a proud moment...This new arena will improve access to critical therapeutic services."

The facility is named after Richard A. Kelley, an early supporter of horseback riding at Giant City State Park since 1982. Giant City Stables has been offering therapeutic riding for over three decades to individuals with disabilities and veterans.

In 2024 alone, Illinois state parks attracted over 41 million visitors—a record high in nearly 15 years—thanks to investments aimed at enhancing recreational opportunities.

"As a health care provider...I'm thrilled that IDNR can play a part in ensuring southern Illinoisans who benefit from equine therapy will not only have access to it but will be able to enjoy it in the best conditions possible year-round," said Natalie Phelps Finnie from IDNR.

Kristin Richards from DCEO added: "This investment is a testament to the importance of collaboration..."

Ramona Twellman from Giant City Stables noted their longstanding impact: "Giant City Stables has offered trail rides and therapeutic programs that change lives for over four decades — one hoofbeat at a time."

Jenny Vaughn from ICF reflected on their role: "We were honored to be part of this effort because it reflects our mission..."

Since taking office, Governor Pritzker has prioritized support for IDNR after years of budget cuts under previous administrations.
