Ira “Lou” Smith, aged 74, of Joliet, Illinois, passed away on May 24, 2025. Born in Memphis, Tennessee, Lou served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War aboard the USS Jason (AR8) before dedicating himself to supporting veterans at VFW Cantigny Post 367 for 15 years, serving 7 years as Post Commander. After 32 years at Citgo Lemont Refinery, he retired and continued his service to the community. Lou is survived by his wife Debora, children Jennifer and Michael, grandson Jason, sister-in-law Candy, brother-in-law Steve, and beloved dog LuLu. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, nieces, and daughter Jana. A memorial visitation and service will be held at Forsythe Gould Funeral Home on May 30, 2025, with inurnment at Elmhurst Cemetery. Arrangements by Forsythe Gould Funeral Home.
