The U.S. Supreme Court has dismissed a $10 billion lawsuit filed by Mexico against American gun manufacturers, including Smith & Wesson. The lawsuit accused these companies of contributing to cartel violence through illegal gun trafficking.
A statement from the Illinois State Rifle Association (ISRA) emphasized the court's decision as a recognition of Second Amendment rights and legal protections for the firearms industry. "The U.S. Supreme court has rejected Mexico’s $10 billion lawsuit against U.S. gun manufacturers, including Smith & Wesson – which falsely claims they are fueling cartel violence by facilitating illegal gun trafficking," said the ISRA.
The ruling also acknowledged that certain firearms, such as AR-15s, AK-47s, and .50 caliber rifles, are widely legal and popular among consumers in the United States. This was highlighted in a note citing NPR's report on the AR-15 being the most popular rifle in the country.
"The highest court in the land recognizes our 2nd Amendment rights; and today – they also recognize our industry’s legal protections," continued the ISRA statement.
This decision underscores ongoing debates about firearm regulations and international accountability concerning arms sales.
