School is out, and the Du Quoin State Fairgrounds are inviting the community to enjoy a variety of free summer activities. Spanning 750 acres, the fairgrounds offer numerous opportunities for both adventure and relaxation.
One of the highlights is "Chalk the ‘Phalt," which takes place every Friday in June. Participants are encouraged to bring sidewalk chalk and create colorful masterpieces on asphalt pavement. The event aims to make Fridays vibrant and engaging.
For those who enjoy nature, a scenic hike on the Nature Trail is an option. New signs featuring a Natural Areas logo have been installed to raise awareness about the native pollinators planted throughout the grounds. These plants provide essential nectar and pollen for honeybees, butterflies, birds, and bats.
Families can also enjoy bike rides along miles of paved roads that feature rolling hills and picturesque views. The fairgrounds provide a safe environment for leisurely cycling.
Fishing enthusiasts will find several lakes and bodies of water at the fairgrounds perfect for casting a line. However, an Illinois fishing license is required for those aged 16 and above.
Picnic areas by the lakeside offer another way to appreciate the outdoors. Visitors can pack a basket, lay out a blanket near the water's edge, or use one of the picnic tables available on-site. Larger groups may opt to rent a pavilion at a cost of $60.
For more information about these events or updates from Du Quoin State Fairgrounds, interested individuals are encouraged to visit their official website or follow them on social media platforms.
