The Du Quoin State Fairgrounds, in partnership with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), will hold a free kids’ fishing day on Tuesday, July 8, beginning at 9 a.m. The event aims to introduce children to fishing and outdoor activities.
“Fishing is a great sport that exposes kids to nature while teaching them the importance of patience and persistence,” said Jerry Costello II, Director of the Illinois Department of Agriculture. “Events like this free fishing day encourage our neighbors to visit the Du Quoin State Fairgrounds and take advantage of activities and opportunities throughout the year, not just during the fair.”
The IDNR will provide fishing poles, bait, and basic instruction for participants. Advance registration is necessary, as only the first 25 children who sign up will be able to participate. Children under 16 do not need a fishing license; however, those aged 16 or older are required to have one. Fishing licenses can be purchased for $15 at various vendors in Illinois or online. Exemptions apply for fishers who are blind, disabled, or on active military service.
To register or get more information about the event, individuals can call (618) 542-1511 during office hours from Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., except on holidays.
Participants should meet at 9 a.m. in front of Expo Hall at the Du Quoin State Fairgrounds and are advised to bring sunscreen, bug spray, water, and a chair.
The fairgrounds also offer several free activities this summer including sidewalk chalk events each Friday in June and access to nature trails for hiking and biking. More details about events and camping options are available on their website.
