Edwardsville will hold a lighting ceremony for the newly refurbished Leclaire water tower on Tuesday, November 18, at 6 p.m. The event will take place on the north side of the tower, located at Longfellow Avenue and Troy Road.
The lighting is part of a recent refurbishment project for the nearly century-old structure in the Leclaire neighborhood. The Leclaire area was once a separate village before being annexed into Edwardsville in 1934.
Alderman Will Krause, who represents Ward 5 where the tower is located, commented on the significance of the project. “It’s been an icon for the City,” he said, noting its prominent location in the Leclaire national historic district and along a well-traveled thoroughfare in Edwardsville. “We have turned this into structural art for the community.”
The improvement project started in August and finished this fall. It included cleaning and painting, updated wording on the tower, structural repairs, and new lighting features that can be adjusted for different occasions and seasons.
The total cost of refurbishment was about $496,000. Funding came from the Edwardsville Enhancement Fund after approval by the City Council in June. Local companies Moore Painting of Alton, J.F. Electric of Edwardsville, and Federal Steel & Erection Co. of East Alton carried out repairs and maintenance work.
