The U.S. Department of Defense allocated $9.3 billion in fiscal-year 2020 funds through contracts and payrolls in Illinois, the 19th highest level of defense funding among the 50 states and the District of Columbia, according to a DOD report.
Illinois, the sixth most populous state, received the funding from Oct. 1, 2020, through Sept. 30, 2021, the DOD’s Office of Local Defense Community Cooperation reported in an Oct. 22 report. In contrast, Texas took in the largest amount of defense funds in FY 2020: more than $83 billion.
During the fiscal year, DOD contracts and payroll spending in the U.S. rose 8%, or $43 billion, compared to the previous fiscal year, the report said. In total, DOD spending during that time period was nearly $594 billion, amounting to more than $1,800 per citizen.
The top recipients of defense funds by contractor were Lockheed Martin, $72.9 billion; General Dynamics, $22.8 billion; and Boeing, $22.4 billion.
