Illinois ranks 27th among the 50 states and the District of Columbia based on the number of miles of roadway in each state per charging station, according to a new study by the news and commentary website Electrek.
The Prairie State now has an estimated 26,000 registered EVs, but that’s out of a total of nearly 4.3 million registered vehicles, Electrek reported. So EVs represent only 0.61% of the total number of vehicles on the road. In comparison, California’s EV numbers make up 2.9% of the total vehicle numbers, according to the study.
Illinois has nearly one EV charger for every 63.8 miles of roadway, compared to 2.2 miles per charger for top-ranked Washington, D.C.
Electrek pulled data from the federal Department of Energy and other agencies and institutes to find out the best and worst states for EV charging. The numbers also show that Illinois now has 11.37 EVs per charger.
California is the top state based on the sheer number of EV charging stations (34,775) available to the public, followed by New York (6,679) and Florida (5,747).
