The Illinois Department of Transportation has announced the commencement and continuation of several infrastructure projects in the Champaign-Urbana area as part of Year Five of the Rebuild Illinois program. This initiative, supported by Governor JB Pritzker's bipartisan capital program, aims to enhance safety and mobility while fostering job creation across the region.
Governor Pritzker stated, "Rebuild Illinois is revitalizing communities and neighborhoods by investing in projects and people in the Champaign-Urbana area and throughout the state." He emphasized that through this program, improvements will lead to a more resilient transportation system for future generations.
Among the ongoing efforts are eight major projects with a combined investment exceeding $330.5 million. The largest project involves reconstructing the Interstate 57/74 interchange at a cost of $251.8 million. Other significant undertakings include deck overlay replacements on various bridges, resurfacing roads, and culvert replacements.
State Representative Carol Ammons highlighted the importance of these developments: "Rebuild Illinois continues to improve the mobility and quality of life for Champaign-Urbana communities." She expressed gratitude towards Governor Pritzker for prioritizing infrastructure investments.
Champaign Mayor Deborah Frank Feinen also praised the initiative: "The replacement of the congested and accident-prone I-57/I-74 interchange with a new, modern design that is engineered for motorist safety is greatly appreciated."
Urbana Mayor Diane Marlin added her support: "We appreciate Governor Pritzker and the State of Illinois for focusing on safety, mobility, and function in the systems that we depend on for travel in our daily lives."
Illinois Transportation Secretary Omer Osman urged caution during construction season: "Remember: If you are driving in Illinois this construction season, you will be driving through work zones. When you see orange, stay patient, drop the devices and slow down."
The Rebuild Illinois program began in 2019 with an investment plan totaling $33.2 billion over six years aimed at upgrading roads, bridges, transit systems, waterways, railways, aviation facilities, as well as bicycle and pedestrian paths statewide.
