This Super Bowl Sunday, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), Illinois State Police, and law enforcement agencies across the state are emphasizing two critical safety messages: "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" and "Click It or Ticket."

Steve Travia, IDOT's Director of Highways Project Implementation, stated, "If you're attending a Super Bowl party, the best call you can make before you start to celebrate is to plan for a safe ride home so that when the party's over, you don't get sidelined - or sideline anyone else - by driving impaired." He emphasized that impaired driving is not a game and can have fatal consequences.

Safety should be prioritized if you're on the road this weekend. Ensure your designated driver is sober when it's time to leave the party. Walking while impaired can also be dangerous; consider having a sober friend accompany you home if necessary.

Col. Chris Owen from the ISP Division of Patrol remarked, "Whether you're a Chiefs or 49ers fan, the penalty for driving impaired is much more severe than a loss of downs - it could be the loss of life." He urged making responsible decisions without needing a second chance.

For those serving as designated drivers, abstaining from alcohol, cannabis, or any impairing substances is crucial. Guests rely on them for safe transportation. Additionally, all vehicle occupants should wear seat belts as their best defense in case of an accident.

Partygoers are encouraged to designate sober drivers in advance or use community programs like cabs or ride-sharing services. Hosts should ensure guests have sober rides home and provide ample food and non-alcoholic drinks. Alcohol service should stop at the end of the third quarter with coffee and dessert served during the fourth quarter. Keys should be taken away from anyone considering driving under influence.

The statewide enforcement effort aligns with IDOT's comprehensive multimedia campaign "It's Not a Game," funded through federal resources administered by IDOT.
